I originally started as a design consultant for design and user research but ultimately ended up becoming the main designer for the final design.

There were three main problems identified: lost motivation due to scattered information, excessive time spent on note-searching, and a lack of tools combining good user experience, flashcard features, and robust study algorithms.
Students often lose motivation and momentum when studying due to copying the same information from one platform to another.
Currently, there is no easy way to link flashcards and notes together. Therefore, when students make notes and flashcards, there can be a loss of information with scattered material.
Existing apps that offer flashcard making and note taking are poorly designed and offer unfriendly user experience
My challenge was to create a brand identity, design mockups from concepts, user test and launch designs.
This became the foundations of the company’s identity and influenced the design look of the product and website.
Designed on Figma through multiple design sprints a week, we create high fidelity mockups ready to deploy to the devs and took on for further user testing.
This helped refine and understand what our product was missing. It gave us valuable insights to what our users wanted and needed.
Dekked solution is to offer an integrated flashcard and note-taking application where users can learn with or without spaced repetition-the most efficient form of learning.
Education is increasingly shifting online, with people using digital devices like iPads and laptops for study and online courses.
There is a growing demand for being able to create notes & flashcards on digital platforms.
Available study tools only allow you to create flashcards and notes separately.
One factor that drove our team to the end was the importance of listening to our users and taking feedback to generate purpose-driven decisions. All the feedback and testing has played a huge roll in our final MVP.
of users tested were medical students in their final few years of study. Statistics show that medics have some of the highest amounts of learning material to attain, making them ideal users for Dekked.
of our users said they rely on multiple tools to assist them in studying as there isn't a tool out there that fully satisfy's their study needs.
of users said they've never heard of spaced repetition but would be interested in using it.
of users said they would use Dekked as it fulfils all their studying needs from note taking to active studying through flashcards.
Showcasing the design development of our product, from initial ideation to final concepts. Each stage was a learning curve which helped us improve till our final MVP.
Nothing beats paper and pen, or whiteboard and marker. Quick brain storming helped map out what features we roughly wanted and how to display them
Very rough and basic concepts to visualise the product's features.
Lesson:
The contrasting colour and white text make it hard for users to read for long periods. Brand identity needs to be developed.
Focusing more on the flashcard feature and editing panel. Understanding how a user can personalise their content more easily and what information might be needed.
Lesson:
The whole design is too dark and the feature needs to be more fluid for easy transitions between features.
More developed designs showcasing the features aligned together. Building on a more structured informative architecture
Lesson:
The information architecture of creating information and the flow of making notes to study cards still needs to be improved.
These are the initial designs the team came up with and are designs used for user testing
Lesson:
The information architecture of creating information and the flow of making notes to study cards still needs to be improved.
"The design is minimalistic and very clean. I like the study section on the bottom right."
"There's no way to directly change the fonts and text easily, I like to personalise my text to highlight important parts"
An easy note-taking space with Folders, Binders and pages to organise.
Creating flashcards on topics you learn and keeping them in the same file as your notes.
Creating linked flashcards that stays together, so when you need to look back on more material, simply click the link and takes you right where you need.
Study with spaced repetition or without on study mode. Enabling you to learn your material most efficiently.
Create an account to organise your notes using folders, binders, notebooks, and flashcards.
Create linked flashcards from notes and categorise them for easy access.
Study flashcards using our efficient spaced repetition method or opt for standard study.
User experience outcome
The result of this project allowed people who had high volumes of learning material to create notes and flashcards, and study them using our spaced repetition algorithm.
Our feedback highlighted students used our platform to create their notes for the year on our platform and used them to study and revise.
When setting goals, it is always important to set realistic goals and be okay if they don’t always reach the estimated times. When working on this project, all founders were still studying so it was expected that things may not hit the estimated target.
The start-up life is hard and filled with change. That’s half the excitement. So it was really important to remember that things are going to change and people are too.
When designing the brand identity and style of the product, we went through about 20 changes, it’s a part of the change and development when working on early-stage projects. You just have to remember that there’s always room for improvement.
